Zojo-ji |
This temple, built in 1393, is known as the family temple of the Tokugawa Shogun. Its gate is about 21 meters high and about 9 meters deep. It is designated an important cultural property. The temple is also famous for cherry blossoms in spring and tinted leaves in fall. Near the temple is a statue of Admiral Perry and a monument to Tadataka Ino. 2 minutes from Onarimon Stn., Subway.

Yasukuni Shrine |

This shrine was built in 1869 as "Tokyo Shokon-sha", and was renamed "Yasukuni Shrine" in 1979. The 1,000 cherry trees in the precincts are famous during the cherry-blossom season in Tokyo. Meiji Jingu Shrine |

Dedicated to the memory of the Meiji Emperor and Empress, the Meiji Shrine was built in 1920. In the shrine, there are about 170,000 trees of 365 species and you can enjoy a forest walk in the middle of the city. During the first three days of the New Year, the front approach to the shrine is crowded with over 3 million people who visit the shrine to pay their first visit of the year. Early summer during the season of Japanese irises, 1,500 Japanese irises of 150 species bloom. Not only the New Year but also early summer is a good season to visit. This temple appears in the Tora-san movie series, "Otoko wa tsuraiyo", now shown throughout Europe, the U.S. and Asia. The approach to the temple with its shitamachi atmosphere has been preserved. See it on festival days, if you can handle the crowds. 5 minutes from Shibamata Stn,. Keisei Line.

This temple is closely associated with "Chushingura", which is known as the theme of historical plays and Kabuki. It houses the tombs of "Ako-roshi Shijushichi-shi" including Kuranosuke Oishi, and the tomb of Takuminokami Asano. "Kubi-arai Ido" well is where the head of Kozukenosuke Kira was said to have been washed.
