[Japan's Largest Collection of Edo Antique Kimono Katagami]
- Over 5,000 Katagami since the Edo Era -
Katagami, formally called Ise-katagami, is a paper stencil used to dye patterns for kimono, exquisitely carved
on paper dyed with persimmon. It was widely reserved for samurai and later spread to other social classes
under the protection of Kishu domain in the Edo era.
We opened this museum at the site of the Kishu to preserve Katagami from the Edo through Taisho periods
and to introduce them to the world. This is a rich repository of Japanese traditional patterns such as Edokomon, geometric striped design, and Kachofugetsu.
Ise-katagami was designated as an important intangible cultural heritage in 1955. The world-class technology and art of design is one of the national heritages of Japan.
